Our Activities

Ruth Ellis House Outreach
We have recently begun working with Ruth Ellis House, a local center offering support and resources to LGBT teens experiencing homelessness. Currently we provide dinner and social activities for the teens at the center with hopes to expand our involvement to include health support resources.

National Coming Out Day
National Coming Out Day is on October 11. Each year, we encourage everyone that is a member of the LGBT community or an ally to wear a red shirt to class to show their support for equal rights for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

National GLMA Conference, Seattle, WA in 2009
We are currently working to get funding for travel expenses to attend the upcoming national forum on LGBT health issues sponsored by the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association.

LGBT Health Screening
One of our upcomming activities is volunteering at a health screening fair sponsored by Affirmations Gay and Lesbian Community Center in Ferndale. Medical students will participate by taking blood pressures and counseling on healthy living.

Clinical Medicine Curriculum
Another one of our projects is increasing the discussion of LGBT issues in the clinical medicine curriculum. This includes representing a broader diversity of LGBT individuals in class discussion of human sexuality and incorporating more material on transgender, bisexual, and intersex issues.

American Medical Student Association (AMSA)
The LGBT People in Medicine works closely with the AMSA Advocacy Committee to help increase educational programming and visibility on campus.

Social Activities
The group provides support for our peers and allies through regular social activities. In addition to outings to enjoy the local night life, last year our students enjoyed an opera night sponsored by our faculty sponsors to view La Rodine at the Michigan Opera House. This year, we will reprise the event on May 13 to see the Opera House's presentation of Carmen.
