Research Accomplishments

Dr. Felipe Vadillo-Ortega is a physician scientist with a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and has done seminal studies in obstetrics and maternal-fetal medicine. His work spanned from randomized clinical trials for the prevention of preeclampsia with the use of L-arginine and antioxidants to fundamental mechanisms behind rupture of the fetal membranes.  Dr. Vadillo-Ortega has developed a multidisciplinary and translational medicine approach to the study of pregnant women. He has published 160 papers on different aspects of the study of pregnancy diseases. He was a Professor at the largest and more recognized School of Medicine in Mexico, teaching basic sciences to medical students. He has mentored the thesis of 50 post-graduate students at the level of Medical Speciality, Master Degree and Ph.D. studies. Dr. Vadillo-Ortega has acted as a research official at several public and private institutions.

Laboratory of Translational Sciences in Perinatology

Brief Summary of Program

Perinatal Research Branch laboratory facilities are housed at the C.S. Mott Center. This core laboratory is equipped with different methodologies directed to study expression and regulation of different biomarkers involved in maternal and fetal diseases. Staff is composed by 8 scientists with different areas of expertise, including high-throughput PCR and ELISA, Multiplex, Western blot, cell culture, protein biochemistry, molecular biology, immunology, and animal work.

Objectives of Section

  • To provide technical and logistical support  for Perinatal Research Branch research goals
  • Develop new research projects in the field of Perinatal Research Branch interests
  • Support laboratory training of students and fellows participating in PRB research projects.

  • Cervicovaginal microbiome in normal and abnormal pregnancy

The Laboratory of Translational Sciences in Perinatology conducts research with the goal of developing novel diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive strategies to reduce adverse pregnancies outcomes, infant mortality and disability.
